True to its subtitle, the focus is largely on the chemical approach to enzyme action.
This is an important component of most Biochemistry textbooks which, however, rarely present in any detail the chemical research on which this information is based. Senior undergraduate, and graduate students, in Chemistry and Biochemistry are the obvious targets for this book since a good background in organic chemistry and in the structural biochemistry of proteins, enzymes and nucleic acids is presumed.
Everywhere the emphasis is on chemistry, the necessary biochemical knowledge being largely taken for granted.
Three opening chapters provide an introduction to Bioorganic Chemistry, the Bioorganic Chemistry of Amino Acids and Polypeptides, and of Phosphate Groups and Polynucleotides, respectively. An important aspect of these is the emphasis placed on analogies between biochemical transformations and organic reactions. The next four chapters comprise the bulk of the book accounting for nearly two-thirds of the pages of text.
The concluding chapter deals with Molecular Devices, ie self-assembled supra-molecular structures, and provides specific examples of helicates, catenanes, dendrimers and other complex structures. Finally there are 50 pages of General Reading and Selected References to individual chapters and an index that is very useful for crossreferencing the same biomolecule eg lysozyme referred to in different parts of the text.
Users of this book will find that the word receptor is used broadly to mean any molecular structure that specifically binds another molecule or ion, in contrast to the very specific meaning given to the word in biological sciences. They will also find several places where a sentence, apparently written hurriedly, is not clear in its intent.

This was especially noticeable on pages where at least five such sentences that relate to hemoglobin occur in an otherwise very interesting section on hemeproteins. Similarly, the positioning of chemical structures of which there are many in the text is sometimes far from optimal. Numbering of all such structures or illustrative panels, and reference to them by number in the text, would have avoided this difficulty.
This is an impressive book that should open the eyes of undergraduate and graduate students in biochemistry to the fascinating and industrially useful approaches of bioorganic chemistry while providing insight into biochemical processes.
Various combinations of sections of this book, supplemented with the appropriate biochemistry, could very easily form the basis of two or three interesting advanced one-semester courses.
While each would have a different focus eg Molecular Recognition and Design of Drugs, Enzyme Modelling, Enzyme Conjugated Proteins , they would all emphasise structure-function relationships, and depend on the interests of the class or its instructor.
